September colors. After it became a federal holiday in 1894, the fashion industry adopted Labor Day as the natural endpoint for summer fashion, making it the last day when it was acceptable to wear white or seersucker.

Big celebration. On September 5, 1882, New York City union leaders organized what is now considered the nation’s first Labor Day parade. Ten thousand workers marched along city streets in an event culminating in a picnic, speeches, fireworks, and dancing.

Less unions. In the 1950s, 40% of the work force belonged to unions (compared to only 10% now).
